Here are a few of my favourites:

Super Mario Bros. 3 was just a play.

The western version of Super Mario Bros. 2 is actually a re-skin of a game called Doki Doki Panic.

Hudson Soft made a terrible and officially licensed Super Mario Bros. game for computers called “Super Mario Bros. Special.”

And here’s one Gamespot didn’t . . . spot, ahem, get:

The Clouds and Bushes in Super Mario Bros. use exactly the same sprite but with a palette swap.
